Monday: Pelican Pond
We actually had a string of nice days that overlapped my weekend, so we were able to go out for a walk on Monday.
We went to Pelican Pond.
Bella even got to go for a nice little wade along the shore. (Though she looks so serious, haha.)
We left Cy at home, since even fairly easy walks are too much for him these days. He gets tired pretty quickly, and I know his joints and feet start to hurt. Plus he's so unsteady, I worry about him falling and really hurting himself. Of course, that didn't stop him from looking at us like we were monsters for leaving him.
Probably the most exciting thing we got to see: an immature bald eagle! (It had most of its adult plumage, but still some mottling along the head rather than the very stark white. Another gentleman who'd stopped to take pictures said he'd guess it's around 4 years old.) We weren't close enough to get great pictures, but it's still exciting to me to see eagles at all. It doesn't feel like it was that long ago that they were a rarity.
There were not actually any pelicans on Monday, but on Sunday morning we spotted one there. It lurks behind the trees!
We are just starting to feel like spring is happening, so things aren't fully leafed out, but it's getting there. Plus there are lots of flowers just starting to bloom.

A cute little killdeer in the water. So loud!

Very overexposed to even make it visible, but a downy woodpecker on the hunt!
Turtles! (And a couple of napping ducks.)
It was funny, but my mom texted me a bit later in the day, because she was heading down to NM the following morning. She told me she went for a walk on the same path and sent me a picture of the very same turtle log, haha. We must have just missed each other by an hour or two.
A bit hard to see, even with the brightness skewed up, but a very cute little towhee hopping around in the underbrush.
It was nice to get to go for a good walk. I'm beyond ready for the cold and wind and threats of snow to end!
